Not So Rude at Ponderosa

January 7, 2008 / by delhijohn

Today was Donna's repeat visit with the dentist. It was the second or third attempt at filling the same tooth. As I said once, maybe it's time she switch dentists. But what could be more rewarding after a dentist appointment than lunch? We couldn't decide where to go, the Chinese buffet is directly across the street from Ponderosa, so it was almost a toss-up. But then I remembered an article I read a few days ago:

Hearty eater' claims buffet banned him

Thu Jan 3, 2008

HOUMA, La. - A 6-foot-3, 265-pound man says a restaurant overcharged him for his trips to the buffet line, then banned him and a relative because they're hearty eaters.

Ricky Labit, a disabled worker, said he had been a regular for eight months at the Manchuria Restaurant in Houma, eating there as often as three times a week.

On his most recent visit, he said, a waitress gave him and his wife's cousin, 44-year-old Michael Borrelli, a bill for $46.40, roughly double the buffet price for two adults.

"She says, 'Y'all fat, and y'all eat too much,'" Labit said.

Labit and Borrelli said they felt discriminated against because of their size. "I was stunned, that somebody would say something like that. I ain't that fat, I only weigh 277," Borrelli said, adding that a waitress told him he looked like he had a "baby in the belly."

Houma accountant Thomas Campo said the men were charged an extra $10 each on Dec. 21.

The argument grew heated, and police were called.

The police report states, "The incident was settled when the management advised that the meal was complimentary." but was told not to come back.

We decided to avoid the Chinese buffet line today and settled on Ponderosa--a delicious choice, I must say. I hadn't been to one of these places in may years, but I found that it was possible to leave full at a reasonable price.

The buffet "upgrade"--for a buck--was a platter with meat and potatoes. I went with the sirloin tips and Donna had a cheeseburger which left in a doggie bag for future use. The buffet doesn't have as much variety as the Chinese buffet does, but there was an excellent selection of salad, three varieties of soup, a taco bar, and a baked goods station.

I'm not sure what she has here, except for the roll--a big shiny roll.

Ah...wings and potato salad.....

The server was very efficient. I wanted to photograph all of the empty plates at the same time, but she kept removing them too quickly.

And then there's dessert! The ice cream machine is the same as what the Chinese joint has, but Ponderosa offers more toppings, including M&Ms!

Even after removing a dozen plates (or so), the server was still smiling, so we left a reasonable tip. I still prefer the variety of the Chinese buffet, but Ponderosa was a pleasant experience for a change!

Any excuse to use the new camera. I'll bet I got a few looks when people behind us saw the flash, but I didn't turn around to see. I think Monday must be senior's day at Ponderosa--we were the youngest (if not smallest) couple there.

I think they did, but that's not something I'd go after.

I heard all sorts of comments about using the first pic in this blog, so I think I'll be keeping the camera out of the bathroom--although it does have a time, which could be fun....

No wonder why the äll you can eat"type joints have gone up so much in price ! LMAO ! Well, at least you had a good time. Enjoy it while you still can !
  • delhijohn said 7 months ago
You'd be surprised to see who does most of the eating--the skinny couple behind us had the "senior buffet" and they gave us a run for the $$. The lil ole lady got one HUGE plate of dessert, and that turned out to be for her hubby. Then she got one of those black bowls overflowing with ice cream for herself! Presumably these places base their prices on the amount of product moved and not the size of the patrons.
  • godfrommars said 7 months ago
Perhaps the "skinny people" were very hungry that particular day. STILL, any way you look at it . . . it still takes the same EXACT amount of calories to produce the exact same amount of body fat ! One cannot get fat by sucking in AIR !

It's obvious that the fat people consume an AVERAGE amount of calories in excess, and far more than thinner people. The only way to keep down the prices and STILL be able to offer äll "you can eat" is to limit the offer to normal sized people. It's a matter of simple ODDS and there is no OTHER way unless you charge more (UNDESIRABLE) or scrap the "all you can eat" feature (an important attraction). I can see that you don't know much about the business side of these establishments. Why ruin it for EVERYONE just based on a few who can't control themselves ? DISCRIMINATORY !

    Well now I'm hungry!!!!!!!!!![LOL]

That's bullshit to charge someone extra at a Buffet - If it advertises "All you can eat" Then you should be able to eat as much as you wish -
If that ever went to court... the chinese restaurant would LOSE!

Yup! Base the price on the amount of food sold and the number of guests and let people eat. If "all you can eat" is the selling point, then let it be.
  • sherry said 7 months ago
My first thought from reading the first line, do they lessen the price for the skinny people who eat like birds? I feel it all work out the same in the end. I love a buffet, and never have room for dessert.[SMILE]
  • delhijohn said 7 months ago
Yup. These places can set the price based on sales--no need to get rude with the guests.
  • shelmadine said 7 months ago
And on the other hand, they love seeing skinny guys like me (125 lbs) come in! Little do they know I can pack it away![TONGUE]
  • godfrommars said 7 months ago
Obviously there are SOME exceptions but REALITY is a matter of percentages and fat people tend to eat more than skinny people; there's simply no way around this biological fact ! Each measure of weight is EXACTLY equivalent to an exact amount of calories. This is a simple fact that has been proven in the laboratory and thinking people do not attempt to dispute this. I HAVE seen people "stuff" themselves more than usual simply because they are in an "all you can eat" establishment but it tends to all even out in the end. Put simply . . . those who USUALLY eat more will TEND to eat more no matter what the venue !

You've made me hungry...We have a Ponderosa here, but it isn't very good. I think they changed owners awhile back so we may have to try it again. I see your still enjoying your new camera...What kind is it? [SMILE]
  • godfrommars said 7 months ago
Here is a site where it can be purchased. It's an economical "point and shoot" camera but has generally good reviews for the price.

  • sybilmarie said 7 months ago
They should not say 'all you can eat' if the dont mean it!!!!
I like chinese but I like ponderosa as well...so good choice for the day![SMILE]
  • delhijohn said 7 months ago
I was at an Italian place once that had absolute crap on the buffet--or maybe it was for people who acquired a taste for cow stomach and some kind of brain...gag...terrible, but I haven't been to a Chinese place that I didn't like.
  • ladyspain said 7 months ago
Meat and potatoes makes my hubby happy as well. It's a guy thing. I'd rather have salad.[LOL]
  • delhijohn said 7 months ago
I like salad too..... before my meat and potatoes! [THUMBUP]
