On the Raod Again ...

January 6, 2008 / by delhijohn

Donna decided that it was time I had a reliable camera--one that works as soon as it's turned on, so she provided it for Christmas. Unfortunately, I had left it at the other house when we left in a hurry to beat the last snow storm. But I have it with me now, and it is certainly an improvement over the Sony. Fortunately it hasn't snowed again in the past few days, but I do like these pics of the back roads. This is day-old snow, but it's still clinging to the trees.

Growing up in Queens, New York City, me, my bro, and the neighborhood kids always hoped for deep snow when snow was in the forecast for the "suburbs". We'd be asking..."are we in the suburbs?" But we weren't and with few exceptions, we got rain.

I do remember a few storms that provided enough snow to shovel into the tallest mounds we could make and then hollow it out into a "fort". I also practiced my engineering skills and built dams in the street--that was guaranteed to gain attention from the neighbors. And then there was the time when my brother almost hacked his foot off while chopping ice with an ax....

Anyway, not much has been happening. I should have had my new teeth by now, but appointments were postponed and it should finally happen next week. Donna broke the side off a tooth not to long ago, and the repair didn't hold, so she'll be having that taken care of tomorrow. I think she needs to start seeing my dentist instead of where she's going now. Her sprained ankle is progressing well, but she still needs to stay off it as much as possible. I guess I'll know it's better for sure when she starts doing dishes again (but she doesn't take advantage of her personal sexy male servant)!

So, the days are getting longer, and spring is on the way--33 days until the daily average temp starts back in the positive direction! In the meantime, maybe I can get the bathrooms painted between snow shoveling events.

Let me leave you with an image that you probably didn't see on the average Christmas blog...

Did I miss something obvious? I don't remember reading about Donna spraining her ankle. Love the pics from the new camera - that's one of my fave presents to get. [THUMBUP]

Donna didn't go for x-rays right away (you know how that is)... It was the Wednesday before Christmas when she went to the doc for a routine appointment, and one thing lead to another. The specialist didn't think it was as bad as the doc thought it was, so we were relieved about that and just went on with life. Waiting on her hand and foot isn't really so bad (read: My day will come).

Nice pictures except for the fact that you need to get rid of the blue hue. Check the manual . . . there is probably some information on "white balance" even in an economy camera !
  • godfrommars said 8 months ago
PS Here is a bit of "after the fact" white balance on the snapshot. Of course it is MUCH better if the process is done at the SOURCE but it's better than nothing !

The copy looks nothing like the actual environment on the day I shot the pic. It was late afternoon, cold, and cloudy. The tinted windows in the truck also no doubt added to the quality of the shot which accurately represents the "feel" of the environment at the time. But you are welcome to display the altered copy if you wish.

I already STATED that you can do only so much after the fact but the blue hue is one of the classic earmarks of an amateur photographer. Secondly, I would need 30 DPI MINIMUM for any corrections and I'm even doubtful your camera is of significant quality for this, There are plenty of good books on the subject; I'm surprised that you would take so many pictures with a camera without learning how to do it properly, or at least reading the manual it came with !

Great pictures. Great depth and clarity. Did you take these through the windshield?[THUMBUP]

Yup, on this occasion, I did. Usually we would stop and at least open a window, but I was just playing with the camera since I had left it behind for a week. Maybe I'll go out in the morning and take some pics of mud. We sure have enough of that these days. The temp hit 58 this afternoon!
