One Day at a Time....

January 28, 2008 / by delhijohn

It adds up.....

Celebrations of sober time in the 12-Step world really aren't about any individual. It takes effort to get and stay sober, but it's something that only the rarest among us can do as an individual.  It's not quite as impossible to stay "dry" on one's own, but I wouldn't trade dry for sober any more than I'd trade a burger and fries for tofu!

That siad, I celebrated 25 years sober on Saturday evening, and it's been the best 25 years of my life!  Step Two says that we "came to believe that a Higher Power could restore us to sanity."  This might be the case for some, but It gave me sanity for the first time, and for that (as well as dozens of other things in my life), I am grateful.

Now, how about a quick Blogster rant?  Since it's a beautiful sunny day here, and I have oudside things to do, I'll keep it brief--get it fixed guys!!! 'Nuff said?

And as always...  This is where I'd insert the "have a nice day" graphic...hopefully soon!

It's more about survival--kind of like not playing in traffic any more.  A wise choice, but.....

    SurprisedSmile!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Another friend of Bill W!!!

Wow an old timer!!  Incredible amounts of my work have been done with clients in recovery, from alcohol, drugs, eating disorders, mental health etc. etc.  I support the "Big Book" as you can take what works for you and leave the rest!!  People have been very creative and turning the word God into something that resonates within them!!

Your fortunate to be so young and to have 25 years on you!!!

  • delhijohn said 7 months ago
Yup.  The simple answer to becomming an oldtimer is: Don't drink, go to meetings, and don't die!

One is NOT sober, they are only "dry" if they don't apply the principles to ALL things in their life. If they still smoke or overeat, they are NOT truly sober since sobriety means MUCH more than not drinking ! I know MANY people who quit drinking and they are overweight, smoking, overfixated on sex, gamble recklessly, or have other problems ! They celebrate anniversaries of LONG durationall the time for not DRINKING yet I wouldn't tradeANYTHING in my life for what THEY have !
  • delhijohn said 7 months ago

If you are satisfied with who you are and what you're doing, you have no desire to "trade" anything with anyone.  And if a sober person has a "problem" with another addiction, (s)he has an advantage over the average person, since working the Program and not the problem will restore balance in one's life.

PS Congratulations on your accomplishment. I wish you many more years of not drinking !
  • mmmhollywould said 7 months ago

I have not heard from you in a while!  and congrats!

  • delhijohn said 7 months ago

Thanx.  I have posted a reply or two to your posts, but with all the complaints about the new and imporved Bugsterville, all the comments look alike!

  • godfrommars said 7 months ago

Working the program and not the problem will restore balance ? If the people who have LONG persiods of not drinking were "working the program", so to speak, then they wouldn't have all these OTHER problems ! In other words . . . the length that a person hasn't drank alcohol does NOT equate with the quality of their sobriety. I have seen MANY people who haven't drank for "only" one year who are MUCH healthier mentally and emotionally than thoise whoi have many, many years !
