It's Beginning to Look a Lot like Christmas!

December 5, 2007 / by delhijohn

Winter has come on schedule this year to the Catskills. There was a trace of snow on the ground for the beginning of hunting season (I don't hunt), and lake-effect snow has been blowing around for the past few days now. With less than three weeks to go, a white Christmas seems to be a sure thing. It will be nice to see 32 degrees again, but that won't happen for awhile. I had to wash the truck the other day, and one side froze before I finished cleaning the other side, but it's worth the effort. Donna just took the big guy out now, and he'll come back covered with road dirt again, but we have to use him again tomorrow, so it will be another day or two before he gets cleaned again.

We have two appointments tomorrow, separated by a few hours, so hopefully a stop at the Chinese buffet will be possible. Most of the Christmas shopping is done, so tomorrow will be mainly groceries. The stuff I'm giving Donna is being delivered, but what came already has been wrapped and sits under the tree. Speaking of which....The decorating is done too. We've been running our tails off, but it's almost time to relax. The semester ends for Donna on 21 December, but most of her major assignments are complete, or close to it.

I don't have any snow pics yet, but here's the tree....

Well, Ok, that isn't "the" tree, that's the kitchen tree. Here's the real thing....

Now that the work is done it's time to start thinking about what to have for Christmas dinner. I tried to cook a goose one year, but it was too tough to cut, so that's out. Maybe a standing rib roast! Can't go wrong with that, except that maybe Donna prefers it too well done. I guess she could have the ends, or maybe we could have another damned turkey! Yum...more turkey soup. The soup wasn't bad. Neither was the turkey for that matter, but I just can't get into having days of left-overs again. Oh well, there will be at least one more shopping trip after tomorrow, so we have some time to decide.

I hope your Christmas plans are going well, and as always...

What a beautiful tree![SMILE]It's a good feeling when you're on top of things, isn't it?

we are getting our first snow right now! we never have a white christmas but perhaps this is the year! I love your tree, its beautiful! [THUMBUP]

Thanx. A white Christmas isn't guaranteed around here either. It's about a 66% white situation, which I suppose, isn't bad if one likes snow.

Things looks great there. We got about four inches. The mountain got a foot or so and good for the ski country, after a dismal last year.[SMILE][SMILE][SMILE]

Weather here is great for skiing too. Too bad I'm too... um...., well, lets just say that I don't ski, although I'd like to if I didn't value my bones.

Dang, john you are far ahead of me. We don't even have the tree up. I'm getting there though[THUMBUP]

You're not out of time yet, so relax. As we say in the Fellowship: Easy does it; but do it! [THUMBUP]

Your tree is just beautiful! We're still waiting for our snow. It was spitting flurries as I was leaving school today, but nothing measurable yet. The snow really adds to the holiday mood.[SMILE]

We only went 30 miles today, and the black truck come home white from road salt. It was too cold (and dark) to wash him this evening, so that's first on the agenda for the morning--as soon as I can handle the hose. It's 8 degrees out already, but at least it's not snowing tonight.

    Your tree is really pretty!
We don't have ours up yet, we've been too busy working on outside decorations.
We had Monday and Tuesday off from school because of the snow, and more snow coming tomorrow night, yay!
Have you considered boiled dinner? With ham? That's what we have for Christmas.[SMILE]
  • delhijohn said 9 months ago
Ham might be a good idea, although I'm not too sure about boiled. Whenever I've had it for holidays it was always smoked and baked in the oven with pineapple, which IMO makes it too dry. But thanx for the suggestion.
Enjoy the snow, I'm sure the "best" is yet to come! [SMILE]

I am jealous, we have ordered our tree, which is coming over frozen from Denmark, they will deliver it to us sometime this week I can't wait to smell it in our house. [THUMBUP]

Wow! This is the first I've heard of shipping frozen trees. Maybe you can blog about why this is necessary. As large a land mass as China occupies, I'd think that they grow pine trees somewhere. Anyway, I hope your tree arrives safely, and have a fun time decorating it!!

i have never heard of such a thing! i cant wait to hear more about it after it's delivered! MERRY XMAS! :)

I want to wish you a holy Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Just one question (which actually has some embedded advice) . . . WHY do you fixate on FOOD so much ? I mean, almost everyone enjoys eating but, with the horrible scourge of obesity and it's associated diseases, wouldn't you be doing your audience a service by dedicating a more moderate amount of time on the subject of food ? Just a helpful, humanitarian suggestion.

    With love and concern,
    George

I once had a boyfriend who said that the trouble with me was that, there were some people who eat to live and some people who live to eat. I am one of the latter. For me food especially around the holidays are reminiscent of warm gatherings with family and friends. A tradition I happily continue. I am a proffesional chef and enjoy reading about food. I enjoy hearing what others eat and enjoy. I think it is neat how John weaves food into some of his stories and do not feel that he is fixated.

Your point is well taken. I didn't mean anything negative by my comment; it's only when things get WAY out of hand (and threaten one's health) that concerns me as a healthcare professional, AND as a concerned friend !

    POTW is amazing! =]
    Have a great holiday.[SMILE][HEART]

    You too! [SMILE]

Your trees look terrific!!!! I haven't put up one decoration, let alone a tree. I don't think it is going to happen this year with my back hurting so much. Geez, I get my breathing problems fixed and now my back and hip falls apart. This getting older is not any fun.[SAD] JR also hurt his back, so we are quite the pair. I'm getting physical therapy, but it is going slowly.

I think the standing rib roast is a really great idea. Mashed potatoes, brown gravy, and peas and yams. Yep... my mouth is watering. And... walnut or pecan pie for dessert. I'm buying a plane ticket to your house for Christmas. lol

Happy Holidays to you and Donna.[THUMBUP][THUMBUP][HEART]

Back pain is one of the worst, tied with a serious tooth ache in my book, but getting old sure beats the alternative! Your dinner menu sounds great except that it will be broccoli instead of peas (never could stand those things except in pea soup). Too bad you can't get a bit of help and get a few decorations up. It helps brighten one of the cold months. Hmm...pecan pie... I know how to make that. It's a possibility too!
  • anniel said 8 months ago
When I added peas to the menu, I figured I'd get a reaction. I haven't found many men who like peas.[WINK][LOL][LOL][LOL]
  • delhijohn said 8 months ago
Well, it's reassuring to know that I fit the mold! I just read Donna's Christmas meme and she wants turkey instead of standing rib, but we'll see. More turkey (ranks close behind peas). It lasted for 8 days at Thanksgiving.....ugh...

I love the tree, it looks so much like a real one..Speaking of trees I suppose I should go out and get one for myself.[SMILE]
  • delhijohn said 8 months ago
Or you could wait until after Christmas when they get very inexpensive.... [LOL][LOL][LOL] Either way, have a wonderful holiday! [THUMBUP]
