Baah Humbug (Yup, I'm Sheepish)

December 9, 2007 / by delhijohn

I was avoiding these quiz things...
But since it was Donna who tagged me (thanx sweetie) well, you know (like I really have a choice).....

1. Wrapping paper or gift bags? Donna did the wrapping, except for what I'm giving her, and I used paper.

2. Tree--Real or Artificial? Artificial--I think my parents had a real one once or twice, but I wouldn't get involved with the extra mess of pine needles.

3. Lights outside the house? Yup, why not! They are functional too.

4. When do you take the tree down? As soon after Christmas as the powers-that-be will let me.

5. Like egg nog? Nope!

6. Do you have a nativity scene? Yup

7. Favorite gift received as a child? The only thing that comes to mind is a red wagon. I think I remember it more because me and my bro discovered where it was hidden.

8. Hardest person to buy for? I didn't buy for anybody but Donna this year.

9. Easiest person to buy for? Donna

10. Worst Christmas gift? I can't think of any. Maybe clothes when I was a kid.

11. Mail or email a Christmas card? Email

12. Favorite Christmas movie? I don't like movies.

13. When do you start shopping for Christmas? Any time I see something that might make a good gift.

14. Have you ever recycled a Christmas present? Yup, it's called "regifting". I just read an article about it--even the Bush's do it.

15. Favorite food to eat on Christmas? Beats me! I like to eat all the time!

16. Clear or colored tree lights? We have both on the tree this year.

17. Favorite Christmas Song? South Park did one that I really like--introducing Christmas to folks from other faiths.

18. Travel during Christmas or Stay home? I used to go to my brother and SIL's house on Long Island when I was single, but I haven't done that lately.

19. Can you name Santa's reindeer? Um... On Dancer and somebody and somebody else... BTW, did you know that they're all female? Yup, saw it on Discovery the other night, so it must be true!

20. Angel or Star on Tree top? Angel, and I had the honor of sticking the branch.... well, never mind about that....

21. Open presents on Christmas Eve or morning? My parents always did it on Christmas eve. I think the idea was so the kids would have something to do on Christmas morning. Seems like me and Donna will do our thing on Christmas eve this year since the kids and grandbabies will be over on Christmas morning and Donna wants to watch them open their stuff.

22. Most annoying thing about this time of year? I don't get annoyed easily.

23. What do you hope to receive this year? I already know that I'm not getting a new BBQ grill, but I'll be happy with what I get!

No new grill? We keep saying we'll get a gas one when we run out of charcoal, but we don't grill much because the charcoal is harder to light because some of it is 20 years old. People think we're nuts but we're so out of it we don't know the difference.

I always enjoy reading your blogs - you seem to be so affable. Enjoy the webcam of your home town, too. I usually don't get around until after dark, but I know it'll all be there still when the sun comes up.

I BBQ year-round with gas. But I wouldn't try that with coal. My b-day is in March, so Wal-Mart will be gearing up for spring by then. The old grill is 15 years old, and even tho it's kept in the garage, the grates deteriorate... Thanx for the kind words... Life is too short to be any other way.[THUMBUP]

I need to mention that I "borrowed" the string of lights at the bottom of the post from Donna's profile page, and she wasn't too happy about it! But hopefully she'll get over it, now that I gave credit!

    [THUMBUP] You don't like movies?[HUH]
  • delhijohn said 8 months ago
Ugh, didn't mean to shock you, but in general, no, I don't. Most of them cost so much to make that the producers have to play to the lowest possible audience. For example, the ten biggest money-makers (or most popular, or whatever) last year all relied on special effects. Boring, IMO. I'd rather read a book.

    "Life is too short". . . .

Unfortunately (the way you live yours) this is so sadly true ! I hope I am wrong;I'd rather be a fool than lose a friend !

I forgot to tag anybody, so it might as well be you. Lets see an *interesting* blog from you (assuming you have any Christmas spirit)! [THUMBUP]

I'm not really into the special effects movies either, but gimme a good story, and I'm there. 3:10 to Yuma was a good one...I haven't been to too many movies this year at the theater but I will watch them on dvd or cable. Looking forward to "Atonement" which opens in a couple of weeks....

  • godfrommars said 8 months ago
Uh OH ! I guess I DESERVED to get HIT after all my posts. I shall oblige as a matter of decency ! lol !

    1. Wrapping paper or gift bags?

I never wrapped. Don't KNOW how. My wives always did this so THESE days I throw it in a paper bag and hope for the best !

    2. Tree--Real or Artificial? Artificial

I always liked "real"better but it IS quite impractical at my age so I go with the prefabricated. Still miss the smell but there's always the spray stuff !

    3. Lights outside the house? Yup, why not! They are functional too.

Lived almost all my life in large apartments so I never quite got into the custom.

    4. When do you take the tree down?

Usually as soon as I can after the New Year !

    5. Like egg nog?

Hate the eggs but love the OTHEr stuff ! lol

    6. Do you have a nativity scene? Yup

    7. Favorite gift received as a child?

My toy guns. Always had to be the "good guy"but nowdays I wonder ! lol

    8. Hardest person to buy for? I didn't buy for anybody but Donna this year.

    9. Easiest person to buy for? Donna

    10. Worst Christmas gift?

Clothes. Always felt it was a copout by adults. A good excuse to get you what they would normally have to buy you anyway !

    11. Mail or email a Christmas card?

Depends. For my mom and kids a card; all others an email.

    12. Favorite Christmas movie?

There IS one particular one I laugh with. The one where the kid wants a toy gun . I love the way santa's elves kick him down the ramp !

    13. When do you start shopping for Christmas?

Too variable to make a statement here !

    14. Have you ever recycled a Christmas present?

    I MAY have but I can't recall.

    15. Favorite food to eat on Christmas?

Like John, I have a WIDE berth here !

    16. Clear or colored tree lights? We have both on the tree this year.

    17. Favorite Christmas Song?

I have two . . . Silver Bells (a secular song) and Silent Night (a religious one)

    18. Travel during Christmas or Stay home?

I USUALLY go down to see my family in New York and Long Island.

    19. Can you name Santa's reindeer?

Most of ém but I'd need a little prodding to remember.

    20. Angel or Star on Tree top?

I recall a star but maybe that's all we had available.

    21. Open presents on Christmas Eve or morning?

When I was young (or my kids were young) it was Christmas day. You know . . . the Santa thing. As an adult it is usually done on the day.

    22. Most annoying thing about this time of year?

    I don't like crowds.

    23. What do you hope to receive this year?

I honestly don't want anything at all except good wishes from those I care about.

MERRY Christmas and peace to all !

    George

Re your answer to Laura : Why not bbq with charcoal all year around? Is it dangerous or something?[OHMY] I've done it for years my 24 year old grill... I put new wheels on it, but that's all so far. Someday, I'll paint or replace the legs, too.
  • delhijohn said 8 months ago
I'm not crazy about the wait-time for charcoal under any circumstances, but it's really not pleasant in the winter when the evening temp is in the teens or twenties, so I stick with gas. I used charcoal at Donna's last summer, but I took the last of it back to town, just not fun. I planned to BBQ a few weeks ago (with gas) and ended up doing the ribs on the broiler inside (yup, I'm getting whimpy in old age).

    Hey John!
Where did you stick that branch?[LOL]
Great post. Excellent answers. (You really don't like movies?)[OHMY]
  • delhijohn said 8 months ago
I've watched a few movies on TV, but I haven't been to a movie theater since 1971. I think the flick was called "Death Wish". Really dumb, and a loud audience, so that was that.
